Pete’s story

On February 17, 2025, Peter Lock Martin left his house to get an air filter from his local grocery store in Crozet, Virginia. He never returned. He and another innocent victim were fatally shot at close range in the store’s parking lot. Over 100 patrons and staff were in the store that day. The shooter, who was experiencing a mental health crisis and was armed with an arsenal of weapons, intended to inflict as much damage as possible. The other patrons survived- by chance- simply because an off-duty officer was in the parking lot as the violence ensued.

This incident, however, did not happen by chance. Peter’s wife and children will forever be without the love of their lives because of a sequence of preventable events.

The community he loved so dearly felt safe. They weren’t.

However, through active partnership with our neighbors, law enforcement, mental health professionals and experts in gun violence prevention, we can work together to prevent similar tragedies from happening again.

Our 3 pillars: EDUCATE, ADVOCATE, ACTIVATE

Our Mission & Vision

The Peter L Martin Legacy Foundation is dedicated to preventing gun violence and promoting mental wellness through education, policy advocacy, & community activation. We honor Pete's legacy by fostering safer, more compassionate communities with the support & resources they need.

Through web-based information sharing, professional education, town hall meetings, and navigation services, we aim to educate members of our local law enforcement, judicial system, legislature and community on the resources, laws and processes available to improve mental health and reduce gun violence.

Educate.

Learn More

In collaboration with our partner organizations and local legislators, we aim to support common sense laws and policies that make it more difficult for individuals experiencing mental health crises to access guns - particularly assault weapons. This includes efforts to mandate the training necessary to operationalize common sense gun laws.

Advocate.

Learn More

Our safety hinges on the active participation of community members, like you. Through public health campaigns and town hall meetings, we aim activate individuals to store guns safely, speak to their representatives, engage law enforcement when appropriate and seek mental health care, when needed.

Activate.

Learn More

“Our foundation understands that many in our community are responsible gun owners. We believe that, irrespective of one's beliefs relative to gun ownership, all can agree that someone currently suffering from a mental health crisis should not have access to a weapon.”

-Megan Martin, Peter Martin’s widow & Foundation Founder
